Marburg Virus

A close relative of Ebola. It causes severe hemorrhagic fever and was first identified after lab workers were exposed to African green monkeys.

Discovered in 1967 by Scientists in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany

Contact with fruit bats, direct contact with infected blood/fluids

Supportive care (no approved antivirals, though some in trial)

Avoiding fruit bats, strict isolation of cases, PPE

Marburg was the first filovirus ever discovered, appearing nearly 10 years before Ebola!
